Added – Lockheed’s version of the below posted 8/30. This actually was built and flew (is flying?). Was completed in 2008. Who knew? It’s very cool. Nothing about laser guns though πŸ™‚
Lockheed-Martin “Skunk Works” P791 LTA ACLS

Just came across this. It’s an old video made for Boeing of a proposed airship. The video speaks for itself. The idea went about as far as this presentation and was, supposedly, a Boeing Phantom Works project. I understand this is about 3-4 years old.

At about 2min 25sec; gotta love the discussion about it’s solid state laser weapons πŸ™‚ !

  1. That was a cool video. I saw an article a while back about these hybrid airships, but that article highlighted their use in civilian air transport, not military use. Either use is cool, though. They’re more efficient and better for the environment than airplanes. I hope we see these start getting widespread use within the next 10-20 years. πŸ™‚

  2. I think the Lockheed Martin was the one I saw in the article. It was wide like that and I remember the props on the side. Plus, the article was about how these things actually work, not about a concept. I think they’re already starting to use them in Europe, or at least they have plans to start using them. They’re either building or have built a facility over there for the airships and they want to build a sister facility (or few) over here in the US so that they can start doing flights over the Atlantic. πŸ™‚
